Getaway (2013) Synopsis :
We open to Brent Magna (Ethan Hawke) arriving home. The place has been ransacked, with the Christmas decorations destroyed and shattered glass everywhere. In addition, there is an obvious sign of a struggle, given Brent finds blood on the floor. He calls out to his wife and gets no response. Suddenly, his phone ringsCut to a parking garage where a tricked out Shelby Corvette waits. Brent steals it and escapes the parking garage despite security trying to stop him.
We flashback to him getting the call; a middle-aged man, simply called The Voice (Jon Voight) tells him that his wife has been taken and if Brent wants her back, he will have to do EXACTLY what he is told. The Voice tells him to steal the car. It has been outfitted with cameras to watch his every move, and is armor plated to deflect gunfire. Brent is warned by The Voice that he must do whatever he is directed to do. If he refuses a task, fails in it, or is caught by the police, then his wife will die.

Goofs: Continuity: The passenger mirror is knocked off the car during the train depot chase scene. It reappears and disappears in subsequent scenes

A late night car chase through the cosmopolitan streets of Sofia,Bulgaria; throbbing with that distinct and exotic coolness Europeancities exude when darkness falls... it's an idea that could have beenexecuted very well. Unfortunately not in the case of Getaway, whichinstead slaughters the idea so poorly you can't help but feel sorry forit.
Everyone loves a good car chase. You won't find one in Getaway though.All the chase scenes are nothing more than a nauseating rapidsuccession of very brief cuts. It's literally impossible to get awider picture and understanding of what is going. Many scenes couldhave been quite impressive if they had just been shot at a wider angleand held a longer frame. This does not happen once though. Thebreakneck speed at which the cuts are made (close up of carheadlights-exploding box-back wheel-driver-back to headlights) justdoesn't allow the chase to flow and is frustrating to watch. How canone appreciate what's happening when they can't even see what'shappening?
Selena Gomez may be trying to break out of her Disney image (and goodfor her) but that doesn't mean she's suited to every role. Herperformance here feels weak and definitely isn't helped by an evenweaker dialogue. Ethan Hawke's performance is more believable, but it'sonly one taste bud of sweetness in the overall bad taste this movieleaves.
There's pretty much zero laughs, the first half is filled with thecharacters bickering annoyingly, the chase scenes are visuallyunwatchable, it's painfully unnecessarily noisy and the plot is nothingbut mediocre.
Fortunately I viewed the film at an advance screening and thereforegiven it was free I just felt disappointed, rather than feeling rippedoff as I would have had I actually handed over my hard earned dollarsin exchange for that mess. I tried my best to enjoy the film, but to behonest all I wanted to do was getaway.

The "plot" follows Former race car driver Brent Magna (Played by EthanHawke.) Who discovers that his wife has been kidnapped by a mysteriousman referred to as the Voice,(Played by Jon Voight.) Who promises topromises to return her to safety if he completes a series of broad andlaughable tasks while driving through the streets of Sofia, Bulgaria ina supped up Shelby Super Snake Mustang. Along the way, he runs into theoriginal owner of the Mustang named "The Kid" (Played by Selena Gomez.)
Now, at first glance it's very easy to see that this movie's plot andcharacters are there to serve as a backdrop for the action, which wouldat least be tolerable, if the action was any good, sadly that is notthe case here. Getaway is weighted Down by it's clunky script andfrantic direction. The action sequences are unwatchable, consisting ofexhaustingly monotonous and poorly edited car chases. And in the raremoments where it escapes that monotony, it usually crosses the borderinto unintentional hilarity.
The Acting is what you'd expect from a movie like this, however I willgive Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez for managing to squeeze out *some*chemistry with the laughable dialogue they're given, but not even theycan save this movie.
Never has a movie been more apply titled than "Getaway". Because it'swarning you to "Getaway" and avoid this clunker at all costs.

According to another user, this movie is "brainless fun", which Ireally must contend with. This movie sure is brainless, but there isn'tmuch fun to be found here. The script is dismal, the central plot makesno sense, and the chase sequences are edited in the contemporaryshaky-cam style that makes it hard to tell what is going on at somepoints, which really gets my goat. The whole reason I went to see thismovie is to see some kick-butt car cinematography, but there is better,free content on youtube that I could have watched to whet myappetite(like Ken Block's gymkhana series or vintage rally B-groupfootage). To say that I am disappointed would be a lie, I had a feelingthis movie would be a dud because they hardly marketed it at all andreleased at the end of summer, which is always a bad sign.
Ethan Hawke's performance may be the only redeemable part of thismovie, as I could really tell he was working hard to make the 11thgrade level dialog work. Selena Gomez's acting was predictably sub-par,it seems to me the only reason she was included in Getaway was to getguys my age into the theater. And if the two other dudes in the theaterbesides my friends and I are evidence, it didn't work.
In short, don't waste your time on Getaway, watch The Transporter orTop Gear instead to get your gearhead action fix.
