Story: Maya, a beautiful Russian ballerina, is pursued by the Russian mafia after they kill her husband, a successful American businessman, and financial documents worth hundreds of millions of dollars go missing. Maya is framed by corrupt cops and imprisoned, and then when she is due to be released, her daughter is kidnapped, and she must fight to save her life. Indeed it is clear that it is a low budget movie but the story film isvery good, maybe it is a little exaggerated Chapter drama, but thedirector manages to combine very nice drama leaving room for intriguewith action very subtle. The main role is also played very well and issurprisingly well knows how to fight a simple ballerina. Leaving asidethe struggle with learning techniques, I can say that it would bepossible for a dancer to learn some fighting techniques soon prettygood considering the complexity of the movements they perform intraining - in short worth seeing. I thought this movie was a soldier war/action story based on thepicture on Netflix. I ordered it Just out of curiosity because I wantedto see what Christian Slater was doing these days. I last liked him inTrue Romance but haven't seen him do anything, remotely as good, since.The Netflix promo cover picture http://DVD.netflix.com/Movie/Assassins-Run/70270735?trkid=5966279 must be for a different movie, altogether.The original title, White Swan, was more appropriate and ChristianSlater has only a small role in the first quarter of the movie.Obviously, the promo materials, title and DVD release were designed todraw in action fans and try to get a bigger audience for this filmwhich is more of a psychological suspense thriller mixed with some coolbut unrealistic martial arts. The real star of the film is Sofya Skya,a slender actress with a beautiful face who plays a ballet dancer,Maya, who's life is turned upside down but the Russian mafia, which isout destroy her husband's fortune and find some bearer bonds worth halfa billion dollars. Christian Slater overacts with little sincerity buthe's out of the picture early. The last three quarters of the movie aremuch better than the first. If you get past the initial part withoutshutting it down, you are rewarded with a passable suspense, mystery,kidnapping, revenge, martial arts stew of a film that's worth a 6rating, not the 4.2 average on IMDb. The assassin in the film, iscreepily played by a mostly silent Russian actor and the ultimatevillain is fairly obvious but the film just shuts down at the end,leaving the revenge to the imagination.

I prefer to know as little about a film as possible before I watch itother than the basics, the cast, director, budget but beyond that Ihate to make my mind up before I've even seen it. When I review a movieI tell as little of the story as possible too for the same reason. Ihave fun watching a trailer after seeing the movie because the contrastis usually incredible and it shows you just how skillful some of thesepeople are at creating an extremely exciting looking film trailer for afilm that's very, very bad. I watched the trailer for this and in thisfilm's case it pretty much told it like it was but what I did learn wasthat I'd never watch this film normally, not in a million years. Thethought of a ballet dancer balleting the ass off the Russian Mafia toget her kidnapped sprog back, is taking my will to suspend disbeliefjust a shade too far. She may be able to move a 'bit' like Bruce Leebut that's as far as it goes (in real life) but she didn't even get the'Karate Kid' lessons from Mr Myaggi with his "wash'a on'a, wash'a off"routine. I don't usually mind those type of mindless action movies butI just never really envisioned one about a ballet dancer using herdancing skills like that but I suppose everyone is entitled to have atry. I wonder what will be next, avenging sanitary product tester?

The acting is pretty solid by all the cast, even the stereo typedRussian gangsters they used were on their best acting behaviour. Theywere all so alike I suspect they were all bought from the local'Gangsters Are Us' store, right from the Russian Gangster department,fully kitted out with muscle-bound waddle, receding shaved hair, blackleather coats, permanent scowl, standard height & shape. ChristianSlater who hasn't been picking decent projects recently is the biggestattraction in this and his acting is the best I've seen from him inages. He isn't in the film throughout but certainly enough to keep fanshappy. His wife is played by the very talented Sofya Skya who can actand dance extremely well. I'm just not buying the killer ballet movesfor one second, however some of it did look quite good. Fellow ScotAngus Macfadyen has had one bad movie after another since he got hisbig moment playing Robert Bruce in 'Braveheart' but since has neverbeen involved in anything of note. Cole Hauser was great as the junkiebounty hunter in 'Pitch Black' but he's another actor finding it hardto get a decent role. He certainly performs well in this but it's justanother quickie to add to his resume and nothing more.

The writing is by no means original or inspired, it's a basic 'join thedots' recipe with a $4 million budget but director Robert Crombie hasstill put together a watchable thriller that's been nicely filmed onlocation with decent acting, the characters weren't all that good butit does make a good 'B' movie.

Score: 6/10
