The Rooftop (2013) Review by BU PA from Singapore
Impressive work by Director Chou!

Despite the simple story, this movie at times funny, at timesheartwarming, is very entertaining to watch. Intense, bright colors andbeautiful scenes, coupled with singing, dancing and fighting, thisproduction is truly unique to the Asian film industry.

Interesting and beautiful musical that exceeded expectations. Whatcould have been a corny attempt is fun yet rational. The cast members, producers and director really pulled it off. Their efforts are to beadmired.

Watch it to believe it!

The Rooftop (2013) Review by moviexclusive from Singapore
For the record, Jay Chou acts, composes the music, sings the tunes, dances the steps, writes the screenplay and directs this musical actionfantasy 'The Rooftop'. How's that for a multi-hyphenate? Very few, ifanyone, can claim to be able to juggle the same kind ofresponsibilities that he undertakes here, but assuming that level ofcontrol also assures fans that it is nothing less than his vision thatwe see on the big screen.

Right from its opening frame, it's apparent that 'The Rooftop' boastsmany of Jay Chou's unique abilities. Even more than the averagemusical, the visuals here are lively, dynamic and colourful, reminiscent of the energy and verve of his 'Cowboy is Very Busy' MTV(or in Mandarin, '牛仔 很忙'). The music is appropriately toe-tappinglycatchy at times – the very first song we hear as part of a performancethat the owner of a traditional Chinese medicinal shop Bo Ye (EricTsang) puts up for his customers is already an excellent example – andmoody and evocative at others, mirroring exactly the tonal cadences ofthe plot.

But most impressively are the occasional extravagant song and dancesequences, which are nothing less than a delightful combination ofappealing tunes, tongue-in-cheek lyrics and some perfectly timedchoreography. Certainly, that shouldn't come as a surprise to any JayChou fan - after all, his perpetually sold-out concerts are also builton the same sure-fire elements. Still, you'll be glad to know thatthese sequences most definitely do not disappoint; in fact, we will goso far as to say that they are the best thing about the movie, atestament of the dexterity that Jay Chou has mastered in this area fromdirecting countless MTVs over the course of his singing career.

Jay Chou also goes one step further to combine his love for kungfu withhis love for dance – in particular, a scene where he takes out a wholegang of ruffians in a bathhouse is especially memorable for beingsleekly composed like a balletic dance set to a finger-snapping tune.Being both the scriptwriter as well as the director also enables him toensure that these MTV-like sequences flow nicely with the rest of themovie, avoiding the common pitfall of schizophrenic-like musicals wherethe songs and the rest of the movie are two different parts.

Yet Jay Chou's almost singular position at the helm does come with itstradeoffs too. Sticking a little too safely in his comfort zone, hefashions his own lead character in the movie - a rough but good-naturedlad named Wax - as a variant of the strong silent brooding type that helikes and often portrays, whether in his previous movies (e.g. 'InitialD') or his MTVs (e.g. 'Step Back' or ' 退後'). Wax is so distinctly JayChou in his mannerisms and personality that it does get a little toopredictable; indeed, you can already guess that he is maddeningly loyalto his three close friends in the movie, as well as a romantic at heartwho will inevitably get all awkward and self-conscious when he is inthe presence of the girl of his dreams.

True enough, this is as much a story about the bond of brotherhood asit is a tragic love story that his directorial debut 'Secret' was. Theformer lets Jay Chou's character become the de facto leader andprotector of his buddies Tempura, Egg and Ah Lang; while the latterlets him have his saccharine sweet love story with aspiring actressStarling (newcomer Lin Xinai) followed by a decidedly tragic turn thatwill ultimately end on a bittersweet note. Because Jay Chou essentiallyplays himself in the role, it's not hard to guess just how the storyunfolds.

Of course, his 'Romeo and Juliet' setup isn't anything new in the firstplace - instead of two rival gangs, Wax and Starling come from twodifferent worlds defined by their social statuses, which is the reasonwhy Starling's father (Kenny Bee) disapproves of their relationship. Toadd some measure of suspense, their tale of forbidden love becomesintertwined in the second half with the rivalry between Wax and afearsome triad member named Red Hair, which also involves the triadkingpin Lei (Mainland actor Wang Xueqi) and a popular handsome actorcalled William whom Starling's father wants her to date.

That's a lot to resolve in the climax, and sadly Jay Chou stumbles morethan falters as he struggles to bring closure. With an unusually heavyhand, he leadens the finale with a thick dose of melodrama, throws inan unnecessary car chase sequence, and finishes it off with a terriblyCG- ed scene that literally throws its audience into the water. Whereasthe ending in 'Secret' was touching and poignant, his attempt toreplicate that same feeling here is contrived and misguided, an uttertonal shift from the rest of the movie that will only leave youcringing in your seat.

Sadly therefore, what began as a fleet-footed musical ends as anoverblown tearjerker whose epilogue makes even less sense. Onecertainly wishes Jay Chou had exercised more restraint at the end, butlook past that misstep (however huge it may be) and there is still muchto admire about his labour of love. From the rich visuals to theappealing tunes to the beautiful choreography, one clearly sees JayChou's achievement in creating an original song-and-dance extravaganza. And so despite its shortcomings, 'The Rooftop' is still a commendablyambitious effort from Jay Chou - at the very least, it takes muchcourage to do something quite so substantially different from his debutfeature film.

The Rooftop (2013) Review by fandomizfun
Considering the dearth of musicals in the Chinese movie industry andthe surfeit of the usual CGI-ed Hollywood blockbusters, The Rooftop wasa breath of fresh air! A simple storyline, with meticulous detail tothe sets, props and costumes made for a very quirky, retro feel. Thiswas aptly accompanied by the excellent score and soundtrack, allcomposed by the director and lead actor himself, the versatilemulti-hyphenate Jay Chou, in a departure from his usual Mandopop fare. That, in itself, gives him points in my book; after all, how manydirectors can actually write all the music for their own movie?

Of course there was a star-crossed romance, coupled with the requisitefunny sidekicks, various baddies and action scenes of the martial artsvariety. True, the final sequence was a tad melodramatic but enough tokeep me on edge until the very end. For me, the song-and-dance numberswere the main draw and I was not disappointed.

All in, it was a very entertaining two hours of being in Galilee Cityand I left the cinema with the tunes ringing in my ears and the scenesflitting across my mind. And an overpowering desire to watch again!(which I eventually did...and enjoyed it even more then!)
