Harrigan (2013) Synopsis :

Detective Sergeant Barry Harrigan Leaves Hong Kong psychologically and physically battered. He is released from a two year secondment there having killed a triad leaders who is also a police inspector. The back story is, this triad gave the orders for Harrigans home, in Newcastle, to be torched two years earlier - a fire that killed his eleven year old daughter. The reason being Harrigan had been getting too near to Triads in Newcastle operating a Bean Shoot war and protection racket. Harrigans wife died some years earlier of cancer leaving him to look after his daughter and he is determined to root out all those involved in the fire.

With only 6 months left before his retirement he bumps up against a fastidious and pedantic acting detective inspector, Larson and the job is changing. Larson wants Harrigan to see his time out without 'rocking the boat'. The miners strike is crippling the country, reduced to a 3 day week, and sporadic power cuts have taken their toll on urban life. Story: Amongst the Desperation and fear growing in a crime ridden sink estate in northern England, one man becomes involved into saving what little decency and community life exists. It's the winter of 1974 power cuts and coal strikes cripple the country, which is reduced to a 3 day working week alongside Police 'centralisation'. Harrigan (2013) Review by Paul Rogers from United Kingdom

On viewing this film you have to take into account thats it is an Indiproduction with a first time Director Vince Woods and entirely fundedby individuals including lead cast then you watch the film and ask howdid they make a period seventies film with riots and action scenes withsuch little resource. Had this been a French made film it would alreadyhave had awards . It is an unbelievably impressive film dark gritty andrough in the art of film making a real gem. Stephen Tompkinson takesthe lead role in an untypical hard faced character that is verydifferent to his recent TV roles but with support from Craig Conway asthe disgusting paedophile criminal opposite its easy to take sides forthe good and sit on the edge of your seat while the battle for controlof the Newcastle streets between these two characters unfolds. Ipredict at least cult status for this violent and dark piece ofpolicing history.

When someone says "British Crime Drama" I know what to expect, eitherDanny Dyer or another Mockney Guy Ritchie knock-off. So, it was a realdelight to see that Harrigan is neither. Instead of geezers andshooters, Harrigan is moody, dark and tense crime drama set inNewcastle-upon-Tyne in the 1970's. Stephen Tompkinson is a refreshingchange from the usual, in that he delivers a powerful, but essentiallyunderstated performance in the main role. The same is true of thesupporting cast, who manage to give very solid performances. On top ofthis, the film is beautifully shot. James McAleer, the DOP, has managedto get just the right balance between the darkness of the story and thewarm tones of the period. The movie is based on the real lifeexperiences of a retired copper, and because if this it does offer upsome new ideas, whilst not deviating too far from what you'd expectfrom a maverick cop drama. It's a brave production team that takes on aperiod drama on a British independent movie budget, but this onemanages to pull it off with a certain amount of style.
